Alfred Cohen: An American Artist in Europe

Alfred Cohen: An American Artist in Europe is a lavishly illustrated book reassesses the life and career of neglected American painter Alfred Cohen. Cohen was an American artist whose art was firmly rooted in the European tradition; he was inspired in particular by the commedia dell’arte; and by the colour and handling of the Post-Impressionists and Expressionists.

Cohen’s work moved between the European figurative tradition and emerging American abstract expressionism, exploring motifs including the French coast, the River Thames concluding later, in Kent and Norfolk, with intensely coloured, richly textured landscapes ablaze with light and colour.
